Up (THEATERS) 2009

Up - out of 5 reels, this film receives **** (4 reels)
UP is the summer-time hit movie everyone in the family can enjoy. The animation, characters, and story are colorful, funny, and entertaining.
Carl Fredicksen has always been fascinated with exploration, so it is no wonder that he falls in love and marries his childhood friend Ellie. In Ellie, Carl finds a lifetime partner that shares her passion for life, adventure, and fun. Carl and Ellie dream together until life takes its natural course and Ellie must part from Carl's life. Carl no longer coping with his overwhelming heartache sets out on a long anticipated journey. This story offers the viewer a 360 degree view in Carl's quest to become adventurous.
Disney and Pixar have once again outdone themselves. The animation and colors in this movie are outstanding. Factoring in the available 3-D theatrical version, you are talking about one heck of a cartoon. More than just something pretty to look at, Up is a compelling story about how an old man became old. The movie takes us back to Carl's childhood and brings us up to current date. Early-on there are moments the movie takes a leap into some deep adult-life topics, but the non-verbal dialog is vague enough to not affect most young viewers. How Disney walked this fine line so well - I'm unsure. Mid-way through the movie, it remains entertaining and funny enough for the adults, but ALL about the kids. Carl's journey becomes completely over the top and just the right speed for a young child's imagination. The writer's wonderful imagination introduces us to a zany little boy, talking dogs, and other memorable characters.
If you have children, UP is a 'must see' for the entire family. It's a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours on a lazy summer day.
